Mouth Karaoke Bar and Grill was founded by Christy Dilg in 2013 in the Forbidden Series. Christy decided to have an auction event supporting breast cancer awareness and donating the funds raised to the cause after the fans expressed their interest. The Mouth Rocks for the Cause Facebook event went so well that Christy decided to continue the event every year and to add Mouth in all of her upcoming books and donate portions of her book sales to the charity in that story.  Writing has always been about making a difference to Christy and Mouth is sure to add to that.
This year Mouth Rocks for the Cause will hold its third annual Facebook auction supporting breast cancer in October. The event will last a week but Mouth will be doing other things during the month to raise for the cause such as this wonderful collection “Mouth, A steamy anthology” which will feature almost twenty amazing authors together in a box set of novellas. The proceeds will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Carter Ashby – Carter Ashby is a hardworking housewife and homeschool mother by day, and a romance reader and writer by night. She lives in rural Missouri with her husband, three children, and two dogs. Find Carter on Facebook | Goodreads
Josie Bordeaux – Josie Bordeaux is the author of the Alluring Promises series. Her romance novels revolve around friendships, sizzling attraction and steamy sex scenes. Lust, passion and love are all entwined with a lot of drama and fun-filled friendships. Josie lives in the sunshine state with her best friend (AKA – husband) and two sweet, and very creative daughters.
When she’s not driving her kids around town, she’s usually clicking her fingernails on her keyboard or down at the beach where her eyes are glued to her kindle app reading. Find Josie on Facebook | Goodreads
M.C. Cerny – M.C. Cerny first fell in love with books after experiencing her first real ugly cry reading, Where The Red Fern Grows. Her debut romantic suspense novel, Flashpoint was written in a series of post-it-note ramblings that would likely make her idol Tom Clancy blush. She is a post graduate of NYU, working fulltime, and calls rural NJ home with her menagerie of human and feline fur-babies. When M.C. is not writing, you’ll find her lurking in Starbucks, running marathons, singing Disney show tunes, and searching out the perfect shade of pink nail polish. Find M.C. on Facebook | Goodreads
Christy Dilg – Christy Dilg is a erotica romance author and also a full-time medical biller/assistant. When she’s not writing she spends her time with her husband and teenage daughter. She is also known as Radiation Girl after beating thyroid cancer and finally living life the correct way and embracing her glow. Find Christy on Facebook | Goodreads
S.M. Donaldson – S.M. Donaldson is a born and raised Southern girl. She grew up in a small rural town on Florida’s Gulf Coast, the kind of place where everyone knows your business before you do, especially when your Daddy is a cop and your Mom works for the school system. She married one of her best friends at the age of 20 and has one son. She is a proud military wife, has always had a soft spot for a good story, and is known to have a potty mouth. At the age of 31, she decided there was no time like the present to attempt her first book. Sam’s Choice was born and she hasn’t stopped since. If you are looking for a good, steamy, Southern set romance with true Southern dialect, she’s your girl. Find S.M. on Facebook | Goodreads
L.B. Dunbar – I’d love to say I’ve written for 10,000 hours, and that makes me a pro. But I can’t say that. What I can say is I had a story in my head that wouldn’t go away. I thought typing it in my computer would be the end of things, but it only led to another story and another. I love reading, so characters in my head isn’t something new. What is new is my creation of them. Hope you enjoy my favorites as much as I do. Happy reading! Find L.B. on Facebook | Goodreads
Roxie Elms – I’m a wild girl. I write about that. Sexy, steamy reads to enjoy at your leisure. I’m a world traveler from the UK and I’ve been everywhere. Cassie Graham – Cassie Graham is first and foremost, a wife and mother. She has one crazy daughter and a just as nutters husband that she loves dearly. She lives in sunny–all be it, scorching Arizona, where the summers are ridiculously hot and the winters are perfection. She’d pick winter any day. Obviously. 😉
Cassie has always loved to write and is so thankful that she’s able to do it full-time. She’s very lucky to have a husband who works his booty off working so she can live out her dream. Find Cassie on Facebook | Goodreads
Danielle Jamie – Danielle Jamie is a contemporary romance author who loves getting lost in a good book or writing a memorable love story. Her most popular works are her Bestselling Savannah Series, her heart wrenching standalone Tempt my Heart and her steamy new taboo novellas in her Stepbrother Series!
She lives in Upstate NY with her husband, two daughters and son. She loves traveling and seeing the world all the while meeting her fans along the way at Author Events. Find Danielle on Facebook | Goodreads
Lorraine Loveit – Even though Ms Loveit has a very busy life (wife, mother and secretary) she still manages to devote time to her passion for writing, and of course, reading.
Ms Loveit’s current story came to her in a dream and it just grew from there. It is an erotic relationship theme with bdsm elements. She started writing it just to “get it out of my head.” Lorraine has many more stories “in her head” just waiting for her to finish her current series. She also intends writing more short erotic stories.
She lives in the south west of Western Australia. When on holidays enjoys camping with her family and two dogs; always making sure she has plenty of reading material and, since she started writing, her laptop is the first thing packed. Find Lorraine on Facebook | Goodreads
Kristen Hope Mazzola – I am just an average twenty-something following my dreams. I have a full time “day job” and by night I am an author. I guess you could say that writing is like my super power (I always wanted one of those). I am the lover of wine, sushi, football and the ocean; that is when I am not wrapped up in the literary world.
Please feel free to contact me to chat about my writing, books you think I’d like or just to shoot the, well you know.
A portion of all my royalties are donated to The Marcie Mazzola Foundation. Find Kristen on Facebook | Goodreads

I’m a single mother to two amazing children that are my world. I became an avid reader in spring of 2012 and since has read over 300 books. My genre of interest ranges from Romance to thrilling Paranormal.

I started writing my first novel in June of 2013 and anxious to see where this journey takes me! Find t.h. on Facebook | Goodreads
Kandi Steiner – Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa with her husband. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.
Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).
When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order. Find Kandi on Facebook | Goodreads
Layla Stevens – I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma but moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1996. I have a huge family who I shocked them when I told them I was writing my first book. I have had a love a reading since I was young. Reading has always been my escape. I can read and be a princess or a warrior. Reading for me was always something magical. And I hope to pass that on to you all.
I am blessed to be the mom of a little girl named Sage who is the light of my life. {I call her Olga, and she hates it} I did not give birth to her but I choose her. Find Layla on Facebook | Goodreads
Madison Street – Madison Street was born in New York City and was raised in the Bronx, where she resided until she was 17 years old. After 9/11, Madison joined the United States Navy to serve her country.
During the deployments, Madison constantly wrote short stories and she discovered her passion for writing. You will find Madison always on the computer, whether she’s on Facebook, designing websites, messing with Photoshop, or writing for her blog.
Besides writing, her second passion is music and dance. Even though she’s a terrible singer, she’ll still belt it out in the shower, especially if the song is her jam! She currently resides in Virginia with her husband of 8 years, 2 children, a dog, and a cat. She is so excited to start this amazing journey and is honored to be part of such a compassionate and loving community. Find Madison on Facebook | Goodreads
E.A. Sutton – Find E.A. on Facebook | Goodreads
Dawne Walters – I started writing in journals when I was seven or eight when I lived in Europe. Little short stories that were inspired by the many castles and historic places that evoke the imagination. I also kept a journal while deployed to ‘escape’. I would write short stories about military romance. So, some of those will become full length novels…some with a happy and not so happy ending! Be prepared.
I never started out to be an author. I always wanted to be a nurse practitioner. I’ll get there maybe, one day…
My hobbies are photography (yes, I have done weddings, a few CD covers, lots of family and couples sittings). My favorite band is Thirty Seconds to Mars…Give them a listen! Find Dawne on Facebook | Goodreads

The Weight of RainThe Weight of Rain by Mariah Dietz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars“I remember that night with such perfect precision.”

I received this beautiful book as an ARC. After reading it, I feel extremely lucky to have. This book was beautiful and Mariah’s writing is so breathtaking. Sometimes I had to just breath in and out on certain parts because the words just hit the right spot. The words that take your breath away.. I love when they do.

This book is about a girl Lauren (LO) who moves to Oregon to go to school for her dream that neither her, dad, mother or brother support, and are quiet ugly about it. During this book you get a look into just how amazing of an artist she is, the way she looks at the world and studies it, then transfer it into art is amazing to experience in a book. I loved how she watched people, I loved how she pulled things from people that were unexpected. I think that was one of my favorite parts of this book to witness. So amazing. Lo goes to this party and meets this one man that will turn her world upside down and become the main focus of most of his art.

I love Mercedes..This little girl was just such a great added character that made this book that much better. I loved her and her dad and the way they just accepted and made Lo part of their family.

King..This man… part of him frustrated me. His hot and cold temperament drove me crazy. But he had these moments that were amazing, and he definitely has so many SWOON worthy moments, you will have to read to enjoy. I also love his relationship with his family.

I loved this story, I hated some of the stuff that happened, that made me want to slap some of the characters. But this book was definitely a great read. I look forward to reading more from Mariah.

Synopsis

One night changed my life—one that I barely remember.

When I close my eyes, my mind paints a picture of his smile and shades the contours of his hands, the deep scar around his bicep.

I’m an artist, yet my hands are unsteady. With his presence, he has unknowingly broken that something inside of me that makes me who I am.

Being around him is like standing in a rainstorm. First the drops tickle my skin, and then they coat me, refusing to be ignored. Finally, they soak into me, reaching parts of me I don’t think anyone has ever touched.

When dreams turn into reality, will the picture in my mind transfer to paper?

“Why are you fidgeting again?” Allie’s scolding is in the form of a whisper but still reaches my ears as a yell because I know by the sharp look in her eye that she’s ready to stab me with a pin if I don’t stop.

“Sorry,” I whisper. I work to ignore an itch on the back of my neck and another on my shoulder. As I think about how much I hate standing still and why I didn’t see King at all today though he always works in the home office on Fridays, I feel several more tickles across my skin that arise because I know I can’t move.

My eyes scan over the large space that we’re filling. There are at least two hundred other students in here, each with a model who, like me, is standing atop a crate, making a select few of us even more uncomfortably tall. Several people look perfectly relaxed as they stand completely still, their shoulders back and chins raised as though they’re already on stage. My eyes trace over each of them, noticing their poise, boldness, and beauty.

“She’s really pretty.”

Allie’s looks up at me with minimal interest. “Who?”

“The girl over there with the dark blond hair.” I nod in the direction of where she’s standing.

“You’re an artist, Lo. She’s definitely pretty, but her confidence is what makes her stand out so much.”

Allie’s comment makes me stare longer at the girl, noticing her eyes are a little too close together, and her forehead too short to be what is believed to be the definition of attractive. It brings me to hate those ignorant facts even more because she is beautiful, and I’m grateful she seems to believe so without meeting the dictated standards.

“Lo,” Allie hisses in warning, making my hand drop from where it’s rubbing across my mostly bare thigh.

“You should really consider asking Kenzie.”

“I would have if I had known you have ADHD. What’s with you?”

“I don’t know.”

“It’s because you can’t draw, huh?” My attention drops to Allie as she places another pin along the hemline.

“That’s definitely not helping.”

“When do you think you’ll be able to hold a pencil again? Are your professors freaking out?”

“I don’t know. I’m hoping by the end of this week so I can draw while I’m home for Christmas.”

“Are you excited?”

Her gaze remains fixed on the dress as I raise my eyebrows, her question sinking into my thoughts. “I guess. I don’t know.”

“You don’t talk about your family much.” Allie’s eyes dart to mine for just a fraction of a second, but I’m sure it’s long enough to notice mine working to evade contact.

“There’s not a whole lot to say.”

“What happened to your mom this week?” I feel her briefly glance up again before moving her hands to a new spot where she begins measuring the fabric for the next pin.

“Something came up. I’m sure I’ll see her after the holidays. You know how this time of year is.”

She places a white chalk pencil between her teeth and nods slowly as if debating that it’s the correct response. She frees it again, intently focusing on the fabric, and places a careful mark. “You aren’t mad?”

I shrug, earning a glare from her that I return with a frown. Her lips fall open into a laugh. “You just need to focus on someone and mentally draw them; otherwise, you’re never going to make it out of here tonight, at least not without a thousand pinholes.”

My neck twists as I look around the room again. There are so many people in here. So much beauty, anticipation, desire, and passion: things I seek for my own inspiration, yet when I close my eyes and start sketching lines across my imagination, they don’t make up anyone that’s in here. I think I’d be surprised at this point if they ever do again. There are times like yesterday when I genuinely wish I hated him. Hell, he’s been a jackass to me enough that I could justifiably say I do, and anyone would be able to understand where I’m coming from. Then again, that would also require having someone to discuss my feelings for and interactions with him.

I wish I hadn’t been exposed to the kinder sides of him.

I wish I didn’t see how he acts around Mercedes to witness his unconditional love for her.

I wish my memories of that night were fading rather than becoming clearer.

I wish I wasn’t falling for this asshole.

I wish he’d fall for me.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 Beautiful Stars.

I absolutely loved this book. I started and finished this book on the same day. Needless to say I completely devoured this book. This book was witty, romantic, LOL funny ( I don’t know how many times I almost peed in my pants from laughing), and the book was enduring. I had the best time reading it….Did I mention that I #UglyCried during near the end..not from heartbreak…(No Spoilers) you will just have to read to understand…So BEAUTIFUL.

Navie, loved the name, loved this fiery, petite character that Jessica created. She is possibly one of my favorite female/lead characters. I love that she completely takes no crap from anyone, she tells like it is. It is refreshing to see a female be stronger than her fear. and the LOL times she completely schools Rowan is hands down the reason I love this book so much.

Rowan, is a successful, hot playboy author…he takes a lot of getting use to. But at first I wanted to punch him in his face. God he made me so mad but I loved watching this angry, mad at life guy turn into this charming, still sexy, romantic, heart warming guy. SWOON.

Together Navie and Rowan had the funnest relationship to watch grow, I loved the bickering, I just loved their story. If you are looking for that feel good witty book. This is a #MustRead for you.

Love Hate Relationship

synopsis

People say that sometimes the line between love and hate is thin. What they don’t tell you is that sometimes it’s invisible.

Rowan Locklaine gave his heart to one woman a long time ago and has no desire to go through that kind of torture ever again. His painful past has turned him cold and heartless. Women serve only one purpose as far as he’s concerned, and relationships are nothing but a waste of time and energy. When the mouthy little blonde, Navie Collins, is hired as his personal assistant, he finds his world turned upside down. And against his better judgment, he can’t seem to stop thinking about her.

Navie Collins has spent years convinced she’s not good enough, that no one could possibly want her. Growing up the way she did helped to thicken her skin, so when she walks into a job interview and meets the temperamental, foul-mouthed, best-selling author Rowan Locklaine, she’s all too happy to put him in his place.

Rowan and Navie are convinced they hate each other. But as time passes and the attraction between them begins to grow, these two stubborn, strong-willed people have a life changing decision to make. Can they move beyond their pain for a chance at something better, or are they destined to let their pasts dictate their future?

excerpt

“Hello?”

“I need you over here right now.”

Temporarily stunned, I stood frozen in place until realization hit me. “Rowan?”

“Who else could it possibly be?” he asked in a detached, insulting tone that instantly got my hackles up.

“People call me!” I insisted childishly. I hated how my maturity nosedived whenever it came to my boss.

“If you say so. I need you to get over here ASAP.”

There was a strong possibility I let out a rather indelicate snort at his typical assholery. “Since you asked so nicely, I’ll be right there!” I answered, my voice heavy with sarcasm.

“Do you always have to be so damn difficult?” he grunted

“Do you always have to be such a raging hemorrhoid?” I fired back. I would have sworn I heard him choke on a laugh if I thought the man was capable of laughter. Rowan Locklaine was more likely to suck the souls from small children than to laugh.

“Did you really just call me a raging hemorrhoid?”

Was that humor in his voice? Couldn’t be. The Devil doesn’t have a sense of humor.

“If the shoe fits…or in your case, whatever Satan wears on his feet. It’s nine o’clock on a Saturday night, Rowan. Have your latest conquest run whatever bullshit errand you need taken care of. I’m off the clock and not required to be nice to you.”

“This is you being nice?” he asked indignantly, causing me to roll my eyes.

“Hanging up now.”

“Wait, wait, wait!” he hollered through the phone line just as I was about to disconnect. Reluctantly, I held the phone back up to my ear. “Look.” He huffed out a loud breath. “I’m…I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to insult you…Navie? You still there?” he asked when I remained silent for several seconds after his apology.

“The world is coming to an end, isn’t it? It’s the zombie apocalypse. I’m not prepared! I haven’t taken any crossbow lessons yet!”

“You’re friggin’ hilarious,” he deadpanned.

I didn’t bother to stifle my laughter. “I like to think so.”

I listened as he inhaled deeply. “Please, I really need your help. I know it’s your day off, but it’s an emergency. I’ll even make sure Lauren pays you time and a half. Can you just please get here as fast as you can?”

“Rowan.” I sighed in exasperation. “It’s at least a twenty-minute train ride to your place. It’s not like I can just snap my fingers and make myself appear on your doorstep. You’re on the Upper East Side and I’m in Murray Hill.”

“I’ll pay for a cab.”

“Fine,” I grumbled dramatically. “But I’m not changing out of my comfy clothes. And I want double-time, not time and a half.”

“Okay, okay. Whatever you want. Just get here.”

At the unease in his voice, I began to worry a little about what was so important that I had to rush over to his apartment on a Saturday night. Not wanting to hesitate in the event it was something major, I slipped on a pair of bright pink flip-flops, pulled a gray hoodie on over my ‘That’s what she said’ t-shirt, and headed for the door. The only change I was willing to make before walking out the door was trading in my yellow rubber ducky pajama pants for a pair of plain black leggings.

By the time my cab pulled up in front of Rowan’s building, he was already standing out front waiting for me. As I stepped out onto the sidewalk, he leaned in and paid the driver before rising to his full height and turning my way. His hair was standing on ends, as if he’d been running his hands through it anxiously, and I couldn’t help but notice how amazing his body looked in just a plain white tee and another pair of athletic shorts. Man, it really was a crying shame he was such a mega-douche. Women around the world would line up just for a chance to stare at him uninterrupted for five minutes.

“Navie,” Rowan’s rumbly voice called out, shaking me back into reality. When my vision came back into focus, I noticed Rowan was standing much closer than he had been just a second before. When had that happened?

“Huh?”

“I asked if you were coming.” His typically chilly blue gaze warmed just a bit as a cocky smirk spread over his lips. “You were just checking me out, weren’t you?”

Oh, hell, I thought with a huge roll of my eyes.

“You were, admit it. You didn’t hear what I was saying because you were too busy checking me out. It’s okay, everyone does it.”

“And then your mouth opens and the fantasy’s ruined,” I responded dryly with a roll of my eyes as I shoved past him. “Let’s get this over with. Too long in your presence and the desire to cause bodily harm becomes too overwhelming to ignore.”

“You know,” he started as we stepped into the elevator leading up to his floor. “I had no idea you were so…feisty. Gotta say, I’m pleasantly surprised.”

“Oh, goody. My purpose in life has been accomplished. I can die happy now.”

Luckily, the doors chose to open at that moment, saving me from whatever smartass comment Rowan had in return.

about the author

JessicaPrince

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

Synopsis

I’ve dreamed of him since before I was old enough to form memories. I’m as sure of this as I am of breathing.

When I close my eyes, my mind paints a picture of his smile and shades the contours of his hands, the deep scar around his bicep.

People say that I’m an artist, yet my mind is vacant, my hands unsteady. With his presence, he has unknowingly broken that something inside of me that makes me who I am, because being around him is like standing in a rainstorm.

First the drops tickle my skin, and then they coat me, refusing to be ignored. Finally, it seems they soak into me, reaching parts of me I don’t think anyone has ever touched. I’m not certain how he’s capable of doing so—I’m not sure that he even realizes it. Sometimes I’m terrified that it’s apparent in my reactions: other times—I really hope that it is.

I’ve been waiting for this. For him.

But I never knew it would come with such a price.

Excerpt

“Why do you pretend that I don’t mean anything to you when clearly I do?”

My charcoal presses hard against the paper as my neck snaps up. He’s fully dressed, his usual baseball hat still on, flipped backward, and wearing a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. Flannel is growing on me, but I won’t tell him that. His face shows no signs of humor or teasing. If anything, he looks almost pained.

“Did you just get home?”

“Why did you pretend you wanted to know me? Why not just call it what it was?” His eyes narrow as his chin drops.

“Have you been drinking?” I know the answer before I ask the question. I can smell it.

“I liked you, Lo.”

My heart races with too many possibilities and hopes, and not enough validation.

“You spend so much time trying to convince yourself that what happened that night wasn’t real.”

“I was drunk.”

“You weren’t drunk. I wouldn’t have slept with you if you were drunk! I don’t do shit like that. It’s disgusting!”

“I don’t remember large parts of that night.”

“You remember more of that night than you’re willing to admit.” His eyes land on my drawing where he studies the image for several long seconds. I should have covered it as soon as I realized he was here, but it was too late from the beginning. It’s of him—of course it’s of him. And to make matters worse, he’s shirtless. The scars he mentioned me knowing about are there, as well as the few tattoos most of the world is deprived of seeing. “Obviously you remember.”

His words make my cheeks burn with embarrassment. He’s right, but hearing that he’s aware of this fact is both strangely relieving and move-to-Australia-tomorrow worthy. “You left an impression,” I admit before moving my attention so I don’t have to see his reaction.

“Lo, I haven’t been able to forget that night either. I think about it all. The. Damn. Time.” His words are punctuated, driving his message much further than just my thoughts. “I spent weeks trying to figure out who you were.” I feel slightly guilty that his admission makes me so happy. For so long I have thought he avoided me, lied about his name and identity so that I wouldn’t find out who he truly was.

“Why did we wait so long to be honest with each other?”

His breath is a snicker. “We’re only admitting a fraction of anything.”

His words run through my head, lacing into several variations of what he actually means, still, I nod. “This conversation needs to happen. We need to figure shit out because I’m tired of trying to avoid you, and I’m really tired of you ignoring me.”

“Aren’t we kind of doing that now?”

He shakes his head as he closes the distance between us, then grips the table with his left hand and bends so his face is level with mine. “If I stay in here any longer I’m going to do something that would probably make me deserve getting slapped, so I am going to say this and then leave.” He pauses. I can smell the scent of beer and peppermint on his breath, along with the warmth of his skin as his shoulders roll forward. His eyes are wide and bright, demanding me to pay close attention to his words. “I know you’re tough. I know you can draw better than any damn person I’ve ever met in my life and most likely ever will. I know you love Mercedes and would never risk changing that relationship. But we like each other, and I don’t know what in the hell that means exactly, but I know I want to find out. The question you need to ask yourself is, do you?”

His throat moves, swallowing words we both know he’s fighting with. Ones that would make things both better and worse. He reaches forward, his chest grazing my shoulder. I hate that I don’t want to move. That I want to absorb the feel of his warmth and convince him to admit truths we both know and bury on a daily basis in a sea of general politeness and attempts to avoid one another. But the truths are laid open with the innuendos, silent stares, and capitalized when we go out of the way to cross the other’s path. He has become an exhausting and thrilling addiction that I don’t know how to consider stopping or even changing at this point.

A long breath runs through my nose as his dark eyes meet mine, exposing he’s fighting his own battle: silently pleading with me to bring things up by making a cutting remark or joke about our night. I know he wants it because it’s the only way we can both talk about it and relive it. It’s apparent by the way his jaw locks and his eyes waver from mine that he also doesn’t want me to respond. He’s waiting for me to consider his words and come back. His arm flexes as he holds the table even tighter. Then he stands and stalks out of the room, leaving my heart racing.

Holy shit.

The Weight of RainThe Weight of Rain by Mariah Dietz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“I remember that night with such perfect precision.”

Life was great.

Perfect daughter, check.

All that was missing was Mackenzie sharing my last name. But life is never that easy. And some choices you make can destroy everything. I just pray I didn’t fuck up beyond repair. Because I can’t live my life without her and I’d do anything to make it right again.

Note: This should be read after reading the novel Chasing the Stars.
***Novella length***
My life was perfect. I had the perfect boyfriend, the perfect daughter—I can honestly say I’d never been this happy in my entire life.
Rolling over, my heart leapt at the sight of my man. Hayes was sleeping peacefully, the sheet flung below his hips, showing off his impressive chest. He had always been hot, but since he came back into my life, he’d gotten hotter, if that were possible. His chest and six pack were very impressive, along with his biceps. But that wasn’t what made my heart leap. It was his new tattoo. A huge star between his pecs with “Harley” written inside. Mac, his nickname for me, was over his heart, but that tattoo had been there for a while.
“Why don’t you stop checking me out and kiss me instead?” Hayes rasped, pulling me on top of him.
I giggled and let my lips seal over his. He immediately deepened the kiss and I sighed. Not only was he great looking, he was also a great kisser, among other things.
“Happy birthday eve,” he whispered against my lips before kissing me again.
“Thanks,” I said, pulling back and looking at the clock on the nightstand. “I better get up and get dressed. Why did I sign up for a morning class?”
“I don’t know, babe. Can I join—”
“Dadddddyyyy!” Harley yelled from her room.
“Never mind.” He sighed and we both got out of bed.
I stood still for a minute, listening to him talk to Harley. Hayes was such a good father. He had been since the moment he laid eyes on her, and it still shocked me. He had always been a player and a big partier, but I guess that just goes to show, if you really love someone, you’ll change.
I headed into the bathroom, brushed my teeth, and took a quick shower before digging out a long sleeve black t-shirt and ripped jeans. I placed my wet hair in a bun and didn’t even bother with makeup. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone.
When I stepped into the kitchen, Hayes was feeding Harley and he had a bowl full of cereal waiting for me. “I didn’t know how long you’d be and didn’t want it to be gross, so I left out the milk.”
“Thanks,” I said, grabbing the milk out of the fridge and adding it to the bowl. After placing it back in its spot, I walked to the table and sat down. I scooped up a big bite and chewed the sugary goodness. “So, what are your plans for the day?”
He shrugged. “Same as always. Although, I was thinking about going over to Carson’s and hanging out before I pick Harley up from the sitter.”
I smiled and shoveled more cereal into my mouth. I’d never actually asked, mainly because I’m scared of his answer, but I’d been worried Hayes only sticks around because it’s the right thing to do. He’d been hanging out with Carson a lot over the last month, and I had overheard Hayes and Carson talking about old parties. Once I heard Carson refer to them as the “good ole days”, I felt that maybe Hayes’ “change” was only because he felt obligated.
I mean, hell, he had replaced me quite easily. When we had reconnected, he had been dating a girl who looked similar to me for several months. Hayes had claimed he dated her because she was as close to me as he could get, but maybe he’d be better off with her. Young and carefree, not strapped down with a child. Stop it. He loves you. He loves Harley. Of course, I knew that, but insecurities died hard.
“Babe, are you okay?” Hayes asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I cleared my throat. “Yeah. I’m good,” I said, glancing at him. “I was just thinking about class.”
“You sure that’s all you were thinking about?”
I took one last bite of my cereal and stood before heading to the sink. “I’m sure.” I rinsed the bowl and placed it in the dishwasher. “We still leaving tomorrow morning for your parents’ house?” Tomorrow would be my birthday, the day before Thanksgiving. Hayes had planned a big celebration for me.
“Of course.”
“Since you want to hang out with Carson, I’ll pick Harley up from the sitter after my last class.”
“Babe, I’ll pick her up. I have one class today and I’m only going to stop by his place for an hour or so.”
“Okay,” I replied, then kissed Harley before walking into the living room to grab my bag. “I’ll see you tonight.” I knew it wasn’t fair, he deserved to hang out with his friends, but I couldn’t help the tightness in my chest.
“Are you not going to tell me goodbye?” Hayes asked, spinning me around. “I won’t push you to tell me what’s wrong, but you better at least give me a kiss.”
I smiled weakly, then placed a kiss on his lips. “Sorry,” I whispered. “I’m not sure what’s wrong with me.”
Hayes smashed his lips against mine, giving me a hard, lingering kiss before pulling back. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” I said before opening the door and leaving.
***
Heading to the union after leaving my second class of the day, my cell began ringing.
I smiled at Miranda’s name on the screen. “Hey.”
“Hey, isn’t today when you have that big gap between your second and third class?”
“Yeah,” I replied, weaving in and out of people walking along the sidewalk.
“Brad and I were wondering if you’d like to come have lunch with us. He’s picking me up in front of the union.”
“Yes. I was on my way there anyway. I’ll see you in a minute.”
“Great. I’ll be waiting.”
We disconnected and I couldn’t help the sudden pep in my step. Maybe having lunch with my two best friends was exactly what I needed.
I picked up my pace, walking as fast as I could until I reached the front of the building. Miranda’s long blonde hair waved in the wind, making her easy to spot.
“Hey, you,” I said, coming to stand beside her and placing my arm around her.
“I have missed you,” she replied, wrapping her arms around me. Miranda was my very best friend, aside from her boyfriend and my adoptive brother, Brad. And, of course, Hayes.
“You just saw me like three days ago.”
“I know, but I still missed you.” She looked down the street. “Brad should be here any minute.”
“Okay.” I took a deep breath and tried to relax. I had no idea what had me all messed up inside, but I needed to get it under control. I knew Hayes loved me, and I knew he loved Harley. Maybe it was our impending trip back to Maverick and knowing I’d be there for more than a couple days. Running into my parents was a high possibility…if they still lived there. I was sure Hayes’ parents knew, but I never asked. I didn’t really want to know.
“Here he comes,” Miranda said, stepping closer to the street.
I glanced up and saw Brad’s big black truck pulling up in front of us. I walked closer and opened the back door, pulling myself up and in. “Hi,” I said. “I hope you don’t mind me crashing your lunch date.”
Brad gave Miranda a peck on the lips before turning to face me. “Mackenzie, you know you are always welcome.”
I smiled. “Thanks.” Brad could always make me feel better with just a simple sentence. He was my confidant, and basically, my and Harley’s savior. I had a deep love for him.
“Where do you two pretty ladies want to go?”
“Anywhere,” I replied as Miranda said, “Pasta House. I want lasagna.”
I shrugged. “Fine with me.” Brad nodded and pulled away, but not before catching my eye in the rearview mirror. He knew something was wrong.
“How was class, beautiful?” he asked Miranda, and I checked out. They hadn’t been dating long, but I knew they were it for each other. They were both blissfully happy, and neither of them felt beholden to the other.
I was so gone in my thoughts, I didn’t even realize we had parked until Brad opened my door with a raised brow. “You coming?”
Shaking my head to clear my thoughts, I said, “Sorry. I’m just spacey today.”
“You will tell me what’s wrong. You know that, right?”
I nodded. “I know. But I promise I’m okay.” I looked around, noticing we were alone. “Where is Miranda?”
“She had to pee so she raced inside. Tell me what’s wrong.”
I sighed. “Sometimes I just wonder if Hayes sticks around because he feels like he has to.”
Brad’s eyebrows bunched. “What the hell, Mackenzie? That boy loves you.”
“I know he does. I do. But I feel like I’m making him give everything up. He doesn’t get to have fun anymore.”
“I can promise you he is perfectly happy. You need to stop worrying.”
I looked to the ground. “It’s just—”
“Don’t you dare even go there.” He took my chin in his hand, forcing me to look at him. “You are good enough for him. You and Harley are all he wants.”
I nodded. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just feel like I’m holding him back…with everything.” I shrugged. “Thank you for being here. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” I wrapped my arms around him and closed my eyes as he hugged me back.
“I’m always going to be here, kiddo.” He released me, flashing a smile. “Now let’s go eat. I’m starving.”

Chaos is a state of confusion or disorder.
Three babies born on the same night. Thrown together since their first breath.
Being the only girl in the trio takes immense about of strength.
My life has always been a state of confusion and disorder.
Loving one person isn’t easy, it takes commitment, effort, and trust.
Loving two takes patience and prejudice.
Loving three takes my life into complete chaos.
“Once I grew up I learned the dirty differences between
A boy and a girl, as it thrust my life into chaos.”

He pulls onto a dirt road. The lights are on as we head deeper and deeper into complete darkness. It seems that the further we travel the darker it gets. I have to admit, it’s a bit scary. I’m beginning to wonder if it was a wise choice to trust him with my Jeep, let alone my life.
“You aren’t going to kill me, are you?” I ask jokingly, but deep down a part of me is serious.
“If I was going to kill you, I wouldn’t tell you. Just trust me.”
So I do, I do trust him. He pulls into an open field and parks the Jeep. He turns off the engine and switches off the lights. I have to admit it’s fucking scary as shit out here. He steps out of the Jeep and walks around to open my door.
“You want me to step out into complete darkness? What if there are snakes or something?”
“I’ll protect you from them. Now come on, trust me.”
I take his hand and step out. My heart is pounding out of fear. We only take a couple of steps away from the Jeep. It’s cold out here, the only warmth I feel is his hand in mind.
“Look up,” he says.
I look up at the sky and see it, it’s glittering with stars.
“Now just breathe and soak in the peacefulness it brings to your soul,” he whispers.
I turn in his direction, wanting to see him, but darkness is all I see. I look up at the sky and soak in the peacefulness. The stars are mesmerizing. I can literally feel the fear and the ache in my chest being lifted. Another piece of my heart is claimed by the man standing next to me. I don’t know how long we’ve been standing here but I finally look in his direction. I feel his body turn toward me. I feel his warm breath on my cheek. I close my eyes but opened or closed the darkness is the same. I lean toward him, wanting to feel his lips on mine. I feel him pull away, but he doesn’t let go of my hand.
“Kiss me,” I beg. I want it so bad it hurts, but he doesn’t. He brings his hand to my face and runs his thumb across my lips.
“Please, kiss me,” I continue to beg.

Excerpt 1:

I drew my knees into my chest and began to sing. In hysterics, my fingernails gouged holes in the flesh on my shins. The words barely made it past my lips as salty tears invaded my mouth. Right here, I wanted to forget the person who did this to me, who made me this way.

You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

God help me. I couldnt do this anymore. I just wanted to end it. That would be the only way to make it better. Free myself of the agony. Living this way just wasnt worth it anymore. I might as well finish myself off all at once instead of shutting down one cell at a time.

I ripped the portals of torment from my ears and threw them down in disgust. Please, God. Give me a sign. Something. Anything. What am I supposed to do? I shivered, a weeping lump of flesh.

The silence around me was deafening. The only sound was the sporadic hitch of air that came from your chest after a good bout of hysterics.

            Breathe in. Breathe out. Hitch.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Hitch. Hitch.
Frantically wiping up and down my face, I dragged myself off the lounge chair. Going to the perimeter of the roof, I peered down, wondering what it would feel like to free fall to the bottom. Take hold of my fate and say fuck it. Break these chains and finally be free.
I pulled myself up and over the cold cement rail and settled my back against it. Holding on, I stared down at the tiny cars as I inched up on my tippy toes and leaned forward. Maybe I could fly like a blackbird. Dragging my bottom lip between my teeth, I creeped further, teetering on the edge. My stomach lurched, and I swallowed hard.
            Pussy.
Another breath and I pushed back, unable to go through with it. That prick wasnt worth ending my life over. Hed already taken too much of me; I couldnt allow him that as well.
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

Excerpt 2:By the time we reached the hallway in my building, all awkwardness was gone and we were laughing and joking.
“Thanks for the help. If I fail another test, Im gonna kill myself.
He rolled his eyes. Oh please, youre such a drama queen.
“Am not! I swatted at him playfully, but he skillfully dodged me.
Out of the corner of my eye, I glimpsed a ginormous, skeevy monster dash out from under a door. With its beady eyes and giant wings, it was raging at me, fists flying.
“Ah! Oh my God! I yelped. Before I could think better of it, I jumped up and wrapped my legs around Blakes waist, nearly strangling him with my arms. Kill it, kill it, kill it!
He secured me by my waist and spun around. In every attempt to keep my eyes on the ferocious beast, my head flew to the right and left as he swirled and whirled, trying to see past me to the ground.
Calm down, its only a water bug, sissy girl, he said through his laughs.
I didnt care. Come on! Get it! I screamed.
He twisted, maneuvering me on his hips, stomping his foot, trying to extinguish the hideous demon. I shrieked into his chest. My body was jolted and shaken, flying from side to side as Blake danced a jig, thrashing madly.
As the pounding died down, awareness prickled up my body. I suddenly realized the severity of what Id done. My face was buried in the soft hardness of his chest, feeling his heart beat against my cheek with each rise and fall. My nose taking in the scent that was justBlake. My hands were buried in the hair at the back of his head, and my legs securely wrapped around his
            Oh my God!
I could feel his appreciation of me spearing me in my girl parts. The skirt Id decided to wear did nothing to create a shield against his prodding tip. It tantalized me, teasing me, begging to be set free and touch me without any barriers. Of its own free will, my body opened up to him, welcoming him. Telling him to come inside and take a seat, stay for a cup of tea. The feeling was so strong, I was nervous Id leave evidence of my own appreciation on his clothes through my thin undergarments.
Feeling him nuzzle his nose on the top of my head, all movement ceased, other than his chest still heaving from exertion. At least, I thought it was still exertion.
My voice was muffled in the peaks of his chest. Is it dead?
“Yes, youre safe. He smoothed his hand down the length of my hair, keeping me tightly clasped with the other.
I lifted my head, then immediately regretted it. Our faces were so close, I could see flecks of white mingled into his blue eyes. They flicked to my lips and he took a deep, long swallow, then his gaze moved back to my eyes, seeking approval. The tension in the air was massive, the pull to each other fierce. It would be so easy to give in to what we both knew we wanted, what we craved. My stubbornness was the only obstacle.
Abruptly, I wiggled and unhinged my legs, signaling he should set me free, but his grip tightened, preventing me from hopping off. The corner of his mouth raised and he slid me down excruciatingly slow, my body pinned to the front of his, dragging down his length, feeling everyeverybit of hislength.
            Fuck.
As I traveled down, his hands traveled up, feeling each curve of my body, and coming to rest on my shoulders. I swallowed hard and realized my hands were still rooted deep into his hair. That as much as I was trying to tell my body to relinquish him, it was grasping at straws, defying me.
I uncurled my fingers, one at a time and dropped my hands to my sides, willing him to do the same. Realizing this would not be the time, a look of disappointment came over him. He dropped his arms but didnt back away.
“See. Drama queen. His voice was gentle now.
            I smiled weakly. Shut up.
“Shut me up. Typically his eyes were wicked when he said things like that, but right now they were devoid of any humor. Longing and desire replaced his usual snarky confidence.
Seeing another notch in my already strained resolve break away, he moved closer, closing the small gap that remained between us. Shut me up, Angel. He brushed the pad of his thumb over my lower lip. I dare you.
My body was in flames. It took everything I had not to jump back into his arms and burrow into his pores. But I couldnt do that to him; he was too important. I looked at him, trying to think of a witty response, but came up empty.
In truth, that was all I really wanted to do anyway. Catch his bottom lip between my teeth and slide my tongue over his. Learn the curves of his mouth from the inside out.
“Its impossible to shut you up. I learned that already. It was a struggle to get the words out when I could smell the mint on his breath. His proximity made the hairs on my entire body stand at attention, and they all seemed to be bending toward his electric current.
“Try me. He hooked his hands underneath my arms and slowly lifted me back up effortlessly so we were eye level again. Wrap your legs around me.
I did as he said.
My body was aching to please him. To feel him. To surround him and be consumed by him.
He kept one arm securely fastened around my waist and buried the other in my hair before bringing his nose to the sensitive flesh beneath my ear. God, you feel so good wrapped around me. You were meant to be where you are right now. Do you feel that? He pressed his chest tightly against mine, and our hearts beat against each others in rhythmic thumps. Aching to get to one another and finally mesh into their other half.
I licked my lips and nodded. I couldnt deny it.
His gorgeous blues followed the trail of my tongue. You kill me when you do that. He brought the pad of his thumb to the glistening trail, yearning in his eyes.
            “Sorry.
“Dont ever be sorry to me. You have nothing to be sorry for. But I do suggest you refrain from any gestures involving this mouth. He tugged at my bottom lip while staring at me with a fierce, carnal longing to claim me once and for all.
He saw the desperate look in my eyes, the shattering of my resolve. The aching desire and need coiling and twisting like a wicked little tornado. Tell me its okay, Angel. Tell me what you want me to do. That you want this as badly as I do.
“I cant, I panted out my words in forced gasps, my eyes watering under the pressure of trying to keep it contained.
“Why not? Tell me why not. Whatre you doing to us?
I cupped the side of his face. Youre a beautiful soul, Blake. I dont want to ruin that. I wouldnt be able to live with myself. Youre too good for me. I dont want you to feel the anguish I go through every day. It isnt right to drag you into that. I blinked as the tears swelled over my bottom lids and trailed down my cheeks.
“Its too late. Im already there, baby. Cant you see that? Im not scared, and Im not running. Im right there along with you, whether you want me to be or not. When you hurt, I hurt. You reside right here. He took the hand still blanketing his cheek and placed it to the center of his chest, each pulse reaching out to touch me.
Youve taken up permanent residency. Give it to me. Let me take it away from you. Protect you. Be with me and I swear, you wont hurt anymore.
His words wrapped around my heart and clenched. Helping it beat in its weakened state. I wanted so badly to believe I could do this. To believe it would be okay. That I wouldnt destroy him.
“Just be sure when this happens, youre ready because youll be mine from that moment forward. I dont intend on letting you goever. He slid one finger under my chin and lifted my tear-stained gaze to his. Be with me, Angel. Be mine. Be my forever.
My insides shook violently. My whole body went numb, both unfeeling and feeling everything at the same time. All I had to do was say yes.
Three little letters.
One word.
Yes.
